8 signs it is time to move home
Are you spending all your time thinking about moving house? Are you forever scrolling house listings and visiting estate agents? Here are eight signs that it might be time for a change.
1. You’ve outgrown the space
Feeling cramped? Struggling for space?
Over time, homes can feel smaller than they once did. Maybe your family has grown; you’ve started working from home and turned a bedroom into an office; or you’ve run out of storage space for your belongings. If you risk causing an avalanche every time you open a cupboard, morning rush for the bathroom is becoming a daily battle, it could be a sign that it’s time to move on.
Changing the layout of your home, or adding an extension or loft conversion could give you the extra space you crave. But these options aren’t always practical or cost-effective, and may only be a short-term fix.
If you need more bedrooms, bathrooms, living space or storage, then a larger home might be the answer.
At Tulloch Homes, we have a wide choice of 2 to 5 bedroom new build homes for sale, from starter homes up to large, detached villas.
2. Your home feels too big
As children fly the nest or your lifestyle changes, a home that once felt cosy can suddenly seem vast and empty. Bigger houses also require more upkeep, cleaning and heating, which can become a burden.
If you’re questioning why you need so much space or feeling overwhelmed by housework, a smaller, more manageable home could be the right move. And the emphasis here should be on ‘right’. Viewing a move as rightsizing rather than simply downsizing (the focus here is usually on smaller and less expensive) can help you focus on what you really need at this stage of your life. Moving to a better designed, smaller, or more energy efficient home could help you free up finances or cut down your monthly living costs.
3. Your needs have changed

Life doesn't stand still, and you may need a home that can adapt to changes in your circumstances. Whether you’ve started working remotely, want to be nearer to schools, or now need better accessibility, your current house might not fit your lifestyle anymore. A move to a home with an extra bedroom, a study, open-plan living, or a more convenient location might be just what you need.
4. Your home is too much work
Older properties often require ongoing maintenance. If you feel you're constantly fixing things, dealing with tradespeople, or worrying about the next major expense, moving might be more practical than investing further in a home that no longer meets your needs.
Do you like the thought of a home where all the hard work is already done? In a new build, everything is brand new - from the gleaming kitchen appliances and pristine bathrooms to the energy efficient heating system.
5. You’ve gone off the area

If you no longer feel comfortable, safe or happy where you live, it may be time to move. Perhaps you once loved the buzz of city life, but now you crave peace and quiet? Or maybe you are starting a family and want better access to green spaces, schools and community groups? There’s a good reason the show is called “Location, Location, Location.”
At Tulloch, we put community at the heart of our developments. We build in areas that provide the schools, transport links and other services families require, as well as designing green spaces and play areas for children to enjoy.
6. You’re fed up with the commute
Feeling worn out by the daily commute? Long journeys eat into precious time with family and friends, hobbies and relaxation. If you’re fed up with traffic jams or unreliable transport, living closer to work could make a real difference. A shorter commute means less stress, more energy and extra hours each day to spend on the things that matter most.
7. Your energy bills are too high

As we’ve already mentioned, older homes can be expensive to heat. Poor insulation and outdated heating systems often mean you end up heating your home for longer. Switching to alternative energy sources (heat pumps, solar panels, etc.) can save you a lot of money on your energy bills, but the cost of retrofitting these in older homes can be prohibitively expensive.
In contrast, new homes are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Built with modern materials and fitted with low-carbon heating systems, they keep heat in and costs down. On average, a new homeowner will save almost £1,000 a year on utilities compared to someone who owns an older property.
All Tulloch Homes meet the latest energy efficiency standards, as they feature high-performance double-glazed windows, highly-insulated timber frame designs and efficient boilers with high-tech controls. They have an EPC rating of B or higher, meaning they could save you hundreds of pounds a year.
10. You just feel ready to move
Sometimes, just a feeling is enough. If you catch yourself browsing property listings, imagining life elsewhere or feeling disconnected from your home, it might just be time for a fresh start.
After 100 years of building houses, we’ve seen customers move to a Walker Home for a variety of reasons: upsizing, downsizing, re-locating, moving closer to family, or for the excitement of moving to a new build house.
